The Beard of Wimbledon 2017: Winner Announced
Beard Liberation Front has announced the winner of their Beard of Wimbledon 2017 poll as Marin Cilic.
If you’ve eagerly enjoyed Wimbledon hysteria over the past few weeks, courtside or from the comfort of your living room, you may have noticed over your strawberries and cream that there’s a significant lack of hirsute athletes in play. Typically a clean-shaven affair, this year saw a handful of bearded gentleman take to the court, resulting in the first ever poll for Beard of Wimbledon to be opened for voting.
Beard Liberation Front, a group founded by Keith Flett in 1995, ‘campaigns in support of beards and opposes discrimination against those who wear them’. The poll highlights the rise of facial hair amongst the audience, umpires and players, and we’re delighted to see that more and more men are realising that a beard is not just for winter or retirement.
Sporting (no pun intended) a trimmed full beard with a neat jawline, the 28 year old Croatian crumbled under the pain of a blistered left foot. Although Cilic may have been swiftly defeated in his first Wimbledon Final by the mighty Roger Federer, he beat Dustin Brown, Fabio Fognini, Andy Murray, Benoit Paire and Novak Djokovik to secure the Beard of Wimbledon 2017 title, winning 33% of the vote. As they say; you win some, you lose some.
